Why I'm running

Hi, I’m Tracee – your Community Independent candidate in the upcoming Victorian State by-election in my home electorate of Nepean, selected and endorsed by the Independents for Mornington Peninsula, locals who believe in people-powered politics and doing politics differently.

I’m a proud Rosebud local, born in Rosebud Hospital, grew up in Rosebud / McCrae and now live permanently in the home I was fortunate to buy here many years ago, when housing was affordable.

I’m running because I care deeply about this place – the people who live and work here – and our incredible natural environment that attracts over 8 million visitors every year.

And I’m running as a Community Independent because both the major parties have ignored us and failed us – for decades - and we need a strong local voice in State Parliament to get the outcomes we deserve.

I’m running because the hospital I was born in needs rebuilding – and we deserve our fair share of Government funding and start the conversation about a public/private partnership to get it done.

I’m running because I’m as angry as everyone else is about the $2million dollars the Victorian Liberal Party is costing us for this by-election - when that’s exactly the amount our community is fundraising to buy a new CT scanner for Rosebud Hospital, because that’s how we pay for things here.

I’m running because our roads need fixing, our schools need investment, and we need our fair share of Victoria’s Big Build investment in affordable housing and infrastructure projects to ensure Nepean can continue to thrive.

I’m running because our local economy - our local businesses, tourism operators, producers, growers and makers - need a local champion to celebrate their innovation and resilience, and fight for a better deal when it comes to unfair payroll taxes because we’re classified as metro Melbourne.

I’m running because my hometown is now the rough sleeping capital of the state, and so many people here are doing it tough. Yet the people working hardest for folks who need it most receive no State Government funding - it’s a community-funded safety net stretched beyond capacity.

I’m running because I’m passionate about our natural environment – the UNESCO-recognised Biosphere and RAMSAR-listed wetlands and our much-loved Green Wedge, and I will fiercely advocate to protect it. And I’m running because our community said no to inappropriate development in a public-owned State Park at Arthur’s Seat and the Allan Government ignored us.

I’m running because our coastal communities are vulnerable to rising sea levels, tidal surge and coastal erosion and failing to act to mitigate climate change will come at a huge economic cost. We need to incentivise community-led initiatives to reduce our carbon emissions and reduce waste to sustain a liveable Peninsula.

I’m running because our incredible local arts, music and creative community is world-class and continues to drive cultural tourism here, contributing to a visitor economy of $1.8 billion across our region. I will be the champion our creatives deserve, and their biggest fan.

I’m running because I’ve spent my working life listening to people and giving voice to their concerns – and I have what it takes to make sure we are heard.

I’m running because there has never been a better moment to find our Nepean voice in State Parliament.

And I will be that strong independent voice to get the outcomes we deserve.

We can make history in Nepean. By electing our first Community Independent AND the first woman as the State Member for Nepean.

Local. Honest. Independent.
